What is Mud Cloth?

• Mud cloth originates from West Africa, particularly Mali, and is traditionally made by the Bamana/Bambara people.
• The word “Bògòlanfini” comes from the Bambara language: “bogo” = earth/mud, “lan” = with/by means of, “fini” = cloth. Literally, it means “cloth made with mud.”
• The fabric is usually cotton, handwoven in narrow strips that are later stitched together.

Dyeing & Decorative Techniques
• The fabric is first dyed using plant-based baths made from leaves and branches.
• Then, special fermented mud rich in iron content is applied to draw patterns on the surface. This mud darkens the areas underneath, creating strong contrasts.
